Motivation and Statement of Purpose.

We are living in complex times. The new era of globalization offers great opportunities for enhanced growth and prosperity for countries and people but also brings new challenges and vulnerabilities such as the tendency towards financial instability, wide global and regional inequalities and more limited globalization of labor markets. At the national level, effective institutions and good governance appear as crucial to sustain reform and economic development.  In Latin America there is a continuing quest for sustained growth, less poverty and inequality, better governance and effective modernization after more than a decade of economic reforms.

The core concern of the Center is to understand and propose concrete actions and policies to increase the growth potential of countries, improve social equity and foster human development in its several dimensions including the quality of life and cultural conditions. A particular area of interest for the Center is to increase our understanding on how to improve governance conditions and develop more effective institutions to enable countries to realize the full potential of globalization while managing its tensions and challenges.

In this context and to foster new thinking and independent approaches on national development and globalization issues, The International Center for Globalization and Development (CIGLOB) has been incorporated in Santiago, Chile. The Center will undertake high-quality, fully independent, policy-oriented research of key national and international issues to support institutional reform and development in the era of globalization.  The Center will be also an open forum for people with fresh ideas, new approaches and innovative policy proposals on national and international development.

Organization

The Center will start with a lean structure of associated fellows and rely on modern information and communication technology .The Board of the Center is composed by Andrés Solimano, chairman; Nicola Borregaard, Molly Pollack, Patricio Meller and Carlos Portales. The Center has been incorporated as a private, non-for–profit, academic institution.
